Meet the team

Jerry McLean gets it done

One of three McLean brothers to grow up in the family business, Jerry gained a lot of machinery experience from a very young age. Now, he’s putting that life-long learning to good use with a new office in the lucky country.

Known for his high standards, hard work, and no-crap approach to getting things done, Jerry was the ideal man for the job when it came time for Earthworm to burrow under the Tasman to a new home in Australia.

Yes, there’s no such thing as the perfect work-life balance. But now he’s making the most of a new location with a young family and plenty of opportunities to expand the business. We sat down for a chat with our busy Australian sales manager.

Where did you grow up?

We lived in Dunedin until I was 8, then moved to the famous brown trout and country music capital of Gore. Joining the family business, I was working in the CASE and ASV machine sales for years before we moved to specialise in attachments.

What does a typical day look like in your job?

I’m yapping on the phone, meeting up with lots of people and sending out quotes. After recently moving to Australia to set up Earthworm there’s always plenty to do.

What are the highlights and challenges of the work?

I love seeing a good quality attachment that we’ve sold being put to the test. Whether it’s a building getting pulled down or a tree dissected, that we’ve got the right attachment to make things happen for our customers is always a highlight.

Challenges? Setting up in Australia has certainly brought a few quick learnings. But they’re positive ones! It’s easy when you really appreciate the industry, and I enjoy that it’s full of top-quality people that work hard to earn a buck for their families.

What’s important to get right?

We are very strong about spec’ing the right tool for the job. Whether it be the weight, flows, or pressures – everything needs all need to be considered to get the best performance.

How has the work changed since you started?

The range has increased. So, we need to keep up with all the specs and the potential for each attachment to ensure we can be there with specialist support when and where it’s needed.

What’s it like working with your brothers?

Great! Only the occasional fist fight (no, we haven’t had one for a long time). But seriously, the supports always there – and we’re backed by a great team.

What does a normal weekend look like?

It’s family time. I have a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old that keep my wife and I pretty busy! Enjoy the outdoors, the beach and lakes and mountain biking when I get the chance.

Favourite food?

Love a good Indian meal – a cheesy garlic naan and mango chicken (with a bourbon alongside).

Favourite attachment?

It would have to be the MBI Eagle shear. It’s such a well-made attachment, and I think there are a few people out there who don’t realise what an impact it can make for their operation.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

I’m looking forward to getting the Australia business humming along, helping more and more people here see how Earthworm can help them.
